the hazing incident that is shaking up a bay area catholic high school and their football program. good morning everyone, welcome to mornings on 2, saturday january 26, i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosy chu with a quick look at your america forecast. >> yes, we are warm out there, into the afternoon you'll notice a cool down because we do have cooler weather beginning to move in. and this morning the bigger story may be that patchy dense fog out there. visibility down to a quarter mile, even in one of the local spots. i'll talk about that in just a moment. a mix of sun and clouds and isolated chance at maybe a sprinkle and we are going to be

mainly dry. but cool conditions are expected. i'll detail this for you and showout temperatures coming up. we're following developing news right now. a police chase that ended with the dramatic car crash in oakland just a few hours ago. six people rushed to the hospital as we just got word that one of the passengers, they have died. ktvu alex savage is live for us, including the man hunt underway right now. alex? >> reporter: police at this point are looking for the driver of the suv, but i also want to tell you here that the sergeant on scene, they have confirmed toney a 19-year-old man was killed in this crash here. he was a passenger inside this stolen suv you're looking at right now. it was being chased this morning by chp officers. the suv was packed with eight people inside, coming down this hill when the driver lost control and slammed into a tree. here was the scene around 3:30 this morning here on the drive in oakland. paramedics transported six passengers with various injuries.

one of them later died. the pursue all began when police tried topping this suv when the driver of the suv took off. chp officers picked up the pursuit on the freeway in oakland. it's unclear if alcohol was involved here, but the sergeant tells me that this suv was going dangerously fast. >> when you take these extreme measures to avoid one crime, you just multiply that and you do jeopardize the safety and lives of everybody else on the street. if there is somebody else on out here walking a dog or, you know, pulling out, taking their kids to the babysitter and at the speeds, which, you know, the evidence here indicates that they were traveling, there would be no way for them to avoid that collision. >> reporter: immediately after the crash, two people in that

crash ran off. one of them caught by the officer. however, the driver escaped as he is still on the run this morning. although speaking to the sergeant police department, he tells me that they have good leads on who the driver is as they do hope to track them down later on today. obviously a full investigation will be taken down here as they will be out of here for some time as i'm told by police that once the driver is caught, he'll be facing both felony hit and run charges and also the vehicular manslaughter charges. given that one of the passengers died in this crash. live this morning in oakland, alex savage, ktvu news. recovering this morning from the gunshot wound to the leg. the incident, they began last night when the burgundy camaro crashed into the sedan on east 12th street. and now shortly after the officers arrived on that scene, the driver of the camaro ran away. police heard a couple gun shots nearby. when they went to investigate, the suspect shot at them, wounding the 13-year veteran

officer. the injure officer, they were -- the injured officer was still able to chase them before they finally surrendered. >> this really highlights the level of violence that we're dealing with in this city and the fact that, you know, someone, they will take that opportunity to harm one of our officers in full uniform. this was the second oakland police officer to be shot this week. an undercover officer was hit in the arm on monday after a confrontation. they hope people will anonymously give back their guns at a buyback event today from 10:00 until 2:00 at the san mateo county event center. anyone could surrender weapons. you can get up to $100 for a handgun, shotgun, or rifle and up to $200 is offered for an assault weapon. they say it's providing the funding. the long time fairfield comedy club burned down last night. the fire broke out just before 7:00 p.m. at the pepper belly comedy and

variety theater on texas street downtown fairfield. smoke and flames shot 50 feet up in the air. it took crews more than three hours to get everyone under control. the building is a total loss. >> it is just amazing the flames coming out of the top. it was real bright. it's really sad actually. i hope they rebuild it because they have had great shows. it's hard to see good comedy in this area. >> the club has been a staple in fairfield for a quarter century. comedians that were set to perform in the next few months are postponed. and they are increasing patrols around schools after the suspicious man tried to talk a 10-year-old boy into getting into his car. it happened thursday afternoon near sutter elementary school. police say the boy was walking through a parking lot to meet his grandfather when a man in the 1970s light blue car tried to lure him into his vehicle. officers say they will now patrol the area when children

get out of school every day. a football coach has been fired and five students expelled in the wake of the hazing scandal at a catholic high school in vallejo. officials at st. patrick st. vincent high school said that the head coach chris was fired after five of his players exposed themselves to six younger players in a locker room. they say that the incident was a part of the pattern of behavior that continued through last season. >> they were expelled because the school has a very strict policy about hazing and about abusive behavior. and they violated this. and that's one advantage of being a private school. it's cut and dry and they violated the rules, they're out. officials, they say that the coach was not involved in the hazing, but bares a responsibility because he was in charge when those incidents took place. thousands are expected to rally today in san francisco to mark the 40th anniversary of the supreme court decision, legalizing abortion. organizers say that the pro- life event will begin with a mass at st. mary's cathedral,

followed by a rally at the civic center plaza. protesters will then walk down market street to justin herman plaza starting at 1:30 this afternoon. they expected it to be the largest pro-life event on the west coast. more than two dozen women rights groups are planning the counterprotest to the pro life rally. several san francisco supervisors and the birth control advocates planned to attend the pro choice rally today. fluke made headlines last year when they called her a prostitute after testifying before congress about the need for access to birth control. a rally will include a flash mob performed by members of dance without borders. the san francisco 49ers wide receiver michael crabtree can turn all his attention back to the super bowl now that it appears assault charges will not be filed against him. a woman had claimed that crabtree sexually assaulted her at the san francisco hotel following the team's playoff win against the green bay packers. but after an investigation by the police department, special

victims unit, the district attorneys office has announced they will not press charges right now. the 49ers general manager issued this response saying that the team is pleased with the decision and "michael and the team can now put this behind us and move forward." >> well, it is very fortunate that 49er fans have already struck gold. season ticketholders were entered into a lottery for the super bowl tickets. the winners lined up at candlestick park to pick up the tickets ranging from $850 to $1,250 a pot. >> we didn't know we were getting the tickets until we got that phone call. and so that's really nice. this is our second time we've been picked. >> super dome in new orleans will hold about 70,000 people for the game. they each received fewer than 13,000 tickets. super bowl tickets are averaging $3,000 a piece online. our super bowl coverage continues throughout the morning at 7:15.

welcome back. a live look over at the east bay for you as we have a cool down in stored for your afternoon at this hour. mostly cloudy skies with the patchy dense fog. new this morning, protests in egypt right now after the controversial ruling about last year's soccer riot. protesters demonstrated against the judge's decision to sentence 21 people to death for their role in the soccer riot. the relatives of the prisoners, they tried to break them out. 27 people have died so far including two policemen and two soccer players, all coming after the last riots that broke out in the stands during the game between two rival soccer clubs. 74 people, they were killed. it was the worst soccer violence in 15 years.

this morning the violence came just hours after the outside presidential palace in cairo. demonstrators are holding rallies against the egyptian governor. hurling rocks at police and military personnel that responded by firing tear gas into that crowd from some 2,000 people that had been injured in fighting over the past few days. >> the online hacker group has taken over the government website to avenge the death of the internet activist. >> two weeks a go today where a line was crossed. two weeks a go today. >> they hijacked that site belonging to the sentencing commission and the independent agency of the judicial branch. we have friends of aaron schwartz who said he killed himself after being hounded. he was an internet activist who also helped to develop the san francisco-based website. and he was accused of breaking into the computer system at m.i.t. downloading academic articles and illegally making them free on the net. anonymous says they have

infiltrated several government networks and threatening to release secret government data. police say that they have found the marijuana growing operation across the street from an elementary school. s.w.a.t. teams found more than 400 marijuana plants after raiding the home on dixon road yesterday. investigators have a street value of about $600,000. they are surprised at such a large growth operation. but police say there are signs for residents to look out for. >> what we're finding is most of these grow houses are rental properties because they are causing thousands of dollars of damage. >> other clues that the growing operation may exist, a house where you may never see the tenant with signs of added ventilation and the sounds of fans. an oakland teenager who admitted to killing his parents has been sentence today 25 years in prison. they pleaded guilty to secondary murder in the death of robert cayman. the killings took place a year

ago. the boy was 15 at the time. he told police he had been suspended from school for smoking marijuana and that he didn't want to deal with his parents being upset with him. two cases of staph infection have been confirmed at a high school in lafayette. school officials sent a letter home to parents yesterday asking students to take precautions to stop the spread of the infection. a gym and locker rooms were closed to be professionally cleaned. staph infections can have serious complications and require hospitalization. >> i thought it's not too big of a deal, but i'm glad that they are dealing with it in a good way. >> to prevent that staph infection, the cdc recommends keeping all cuts clean and covered with bandages. students are being reminded to never share personal items like towel and soap and to shower immediately after games and practices. and the nurses association says they are concerned that a part of the berkeley hospital will be without heat or hot water today. they alerted their staff that a

couple of the north building areas will lose service as crews repair a leak in the boiling room. they are taking precautionary steps like ordering extra supplies to protect the patient care. there are no c-section deliveries scheduled and all newborn baths are being postponed. the fairfield police department are collecting unwanted prescription drugs today. drop offs could be made between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. the event is only open to people that live in solano county to help prescription abuse and protect the environment. well the city of new orleans says they are ready to welcome the 49ers when the team flies there tomorrow night. the city has planned for the super bowl for the past two years. they have spent close to $750 million renovating the super dome, convention center as well as the airport. new orleans will host the super bowl and mardi gras during the next two weeks. >> our great city, new orleans, is ready for mardi gras and

thesuper bowl xlvii. nobody has done these two things ever. >> security is a priority. new orleans is adding 300 officers from outside law enforcement agencies to help with patrols. president obama plans to hold wall street accountable for any wrong doing. >> but we also know the free market works best for everybody when we have smart common sense rules in place to prevent irresponsible behavior. >> in this morning's weekly address, the president highlighted his nomination of mary jo white to the exchange commission and richard cordre for the consumer protection bureau as they are both former prosecutors and their new jobs will focus on reforming wall street and protecting consumers from predatory lending and hidden credit card fees. the debate over the president's power to make recess appointments will likely end up at the supreme court. a three judge appellate panel ruled that the president

exceeded his constitutional authority last year when he appointed three people to the national labor relations board while the senate was on a holiday break. the panel rules that the senate was technically still in session. and the ruling casted out on hundreds of decisions that the labor board made in the past year. prison overcrowding is being blamed for a riot that has killed some 50 people in venezuela. security from around the country immediately rushed to the prison, which houses some of venezuela's most dangerous criminals. the number of fights had escalated inside that prison this week as rival gangs battled for control. a prison watchdog group says more than 300 inmates died in the venezuela prisons last year. the battle of parking heats up as a plan on charging visitors is denied. the east coast is now preparing for snow. we'll tell you how people are coping. cooler weather is headed to the bay area for your weekend

they are not happy about charging visitors. they want to install about 15 self-made machines at the beaches and charge visitors a new $8 fee for parking. the fees are necessary to maintain beaches and open others that were closed due to budget cuts. the sonoma county zone denied that request though. the state now plans to appeal that decision. after days of bitter cold, many new yorkers are waking up to snow. the blast left them frozen. check that out. >> it's on the 4th day right

now where we have that heat restored. the city has set up tents on staten island for homeowners still without heat. it's a similar situation for the hampton road, virginia. causing an messy evening commute. the roads were so slippery that some drivers were struggling to make it up the small hills. right now it is still 27 degrees in that area. >> all right. from virginia to right here in the bay area, we will see how our weekend is starting. >> yes, hard to complain about what's going on here as we will get a cool down, but not too bad. we're in the 40s with the widespread 40s. if you take a look, we are dealing with the fog this morning and the flights are delayed or so. expect that if you have them flying on in this morning.

news. one person is dead after following the crash in oakland. >> i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. it began with a traffic stop and ended in a deadly car collision in oakland. ktvu's alex savage is live at the scene where he just talked to witnesses to that crash. alex, what did they have to say? >> reporter: well neighbors around here describe this as a loud crash that woke up a lot of people. we do know that a 19-year-old man, a passenger in this stolen suv was killed in this crash. the suv was being chased by the chp officers this morning. still an active crime scene. taking measurements right now. they had eight people inside of it when the driver lost control on this curve and then hit a tree. we'll show you what this accident scene looked like this morning at the neighborhood here in oakland. paramedics moved in transporting six passengers with various injuries from mild

to moderate. one of them had very serious injuries and later died. that's the 19-year-old. the other passenger has non- life-threatening injuries. the driver of the car, the suv took off after the crash ran away from officers and is still on the run this morning. the pursuit began all the way over here when police tried to stop that suv and again they tried stopping it because they believe that the suv was stolen. i did talk to one neighbor in this area a is -- in a short time ago who saw the accident. >> we looked and we saw that truck go up and into that rock there and like the rock over there and the tree and turned sideways. i thought it was going to flip over, but it didn't. >> reporter: now, two people who were inside the suv ran off after the accident as officers chased after them. one of the men was taken into custody, but again the second man who ran off, the driver, the man police believe is the

driver escaped, still on the loose this morning. stray a good sense of who he is, hoping to track him down later on today as they do tell me that investigators say once the person is found, he's likely facing both felony hit and run charges and vehicular charges. police said that the person was crossing between walnut drive last night. and that's when they were hit by the pick up truck. no crosswalk in that area. the driver stopped and he is cooperating with police. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital, but pronounced dead. the cause of the crash still under investigation. >> the giants fan was severely beaten, suffering a setback in

his recovery. they said that he has been hospitalized after doctors found a large blood clot running from his thigh to his pelvis that could have been fatal. he received injections to help dissolve that clot that has been inserted in his abdomen to catch any new clots before they reach his lungs. he suffered brain damage after being beaten at a game outside dodger's stadium in 2011 and permanently disabled, expected to be in the hospital at least through the weekend. a series of the benefit concerts are being held this weekend to help raise money for brian stowe's medical care. the giants head coach organized and reformed at last night's fundraiser at the sweet water mill valley. similar events will be held tonight in napa and tomorrow in santa cruz, still as the hometown. >> the day it happened, it didn't just affect him. everybody became the full-time care givers and their families.

>> reporter: all proceeds benefit the stowe foundation. they have already raised $70,000 through performances and dvd sales. at ktvu.com, we have posted a link to find his dvd to benefit brian stowe. look for the section under hot topics right there on the front page. a teenage girl attacked by a fellow student on the east bay campus high school is showing signs of improvements. the attack happened in oakley. they say that the two girls had a war of words on social media, escalating into a fight in the school cafeteria. the injured girl who is a senior was air lifted to the hospital with neck and head injuries, said to be coherent and communicating. police arrested the other girl. reported seeing a man with a gun at cupertino middle school made the story up.

s.w.a.t. teams responded, also alarming parents who were notified by phone and e-mail about the search for a gunman. >> we emptied the city for this and then called back other people, other officers to fill in. we canceled a fire training day. >> police have not said why the student lied, but said they will recommend criminal charges to be filed for making a false report. they want criminal charges filed against a man who they say threatened the deputy with a 12-inch knife. authorities say that the dublin incident started with a man showing bizarre behavior. when they got to the home, they were forced to shoot the suspect after coming out to them with a knife. >> he charged at them with a rambo-style knife about 12 inches long. >> that man is expected to survive as they want him charged with assault with a deadly weapons. neighbors say he has a history

of mental illness. stepping up efforts to keep them from leaving as they have approved to spending up to $1 million to turn the area around the coliseum into the coliseum city. and the development, they would stretch 1,000 acres including a new football stadium and the housing and retail shops as they could cost $1 billion with most of the money coming from the private sources. the 49ers are warning fans about phony merchandise being sold on streets. selling knock off gear that took off when we approached them. they said that it will be pretty simple to spot a fake and the signs of the labels split on into the graphics and unbelievably cheap prices. >> yeah, i was trying to get the official license products. and i would like to buy the knockoffs. officially the license products have the nfl hall gram or the stick -- hologram of the logo. the nfl inspector has been in san francisco, baltimore, new orleans to target people selling unlicensed gears and

temperatures from five to ten degrees cooler than yesterday afternoon and then tomorrow morning if you are out early or perhaps to walk the dog, you're going to notice the chill in the air. giving you a live look here at the mix of sun and clouds. continuing with the sun and clouds, although improving as we get into the afternoon. we're a bit unsettled as i will explain that to you in just a moment. but starting out with the fog this morning if you have an early morning drive, it could be hazardous out there. areas over the north part of the bay and down to a quarter mile. napa in and around the canyon, vallejo and areas near fairfield, pretty good fog here as well and down from the east bay to livermore and pleasant -- pleasanton. the national weather service and the sacramento offices, they issued a dense fog advisory, meaning widespread fog with visibility down to a quarter mile for the deltas. so vallejo, stretching into fairfield. you're going to find this if

you do again have the early morning drive to prepare for that. satellite radar here. we will continue with partly cloudy skies for the afternoon. tracking two systems. the first one is here to the south, bringing us that unsettled weather through the workweek. as we get into the weekend, slowly it is shifting east. so now getting rid of that system. that is actually what has kept our temperatures on the milder side. this system is dropping out. they will bring a bit of the unsettled weather. meaning just a stray shower that will be possible. we'll begin to feel it as early as this afternoon. so this system is exiting, this system is pulling in behind the front with that cooler air as we will remain with just a slight chance of the rain. now, just don't cancel those outdoor plans because our chances are, we'll have partly cloudy skies and cooler conditions for the afternoon. 54 in oakland right now. 48 in napa. mountainview down to san jose with a look at the afternoon highs for you want 47 for nevada. mid-50s in concord. again i was tracking temperatures in the mid-60s.

a foggy shot over san francisco this morning in the city, 51 degrees. dense fog over parts of the bay. the search crews have found the wreckage of a small plane that crashed in antarctica. they have not been able to land at the site near the mountain range, but no one could have survived that crash. the plane went down wednesday during the flight from a u.s. research station in the south pole to the bay. three cay maid -- three canadians were on board. after urging people to arm themselves, he's catching heat. >> but are you ready with officers laid off and

teams before being promoted to chief in 2007. >> the sex scandal, they will be hitting the silicone valley as they report that the boy is stepping down from the number 2 position at square. he's being blackmailed by the former boyfriend to continue that relationship after recommending them for the job as they insist that the relationship was consensual. the housing community asked for a leave of absence saying he will not renew his contract. the announcement comes after the employees filed three lawsuits against henry alvarez accusing him of discrimination. alvarez requested the leave of absence because his father has been sick. his contract expires this summer. san francisco mayor ed lee says he did not ask alvarez to resign. san francisco city of attorney said that more than 150 restaurants are committing

well tide detergent is a hot commodity these days, stealing the detergent and putting them on the black market to make a profit. to combat the problems, some stores like this one in colorado are stepping up their enforcement by adding more undercover security and the surveillance cameras. some stores, they have decided to put out less of the products. it is the latest of series of claims against subway showing one of the foot long sandwiches is actually just 11 inches. the chain has apologized. saying they are redoubling their efforts to ensure consistency to correct the length in all of their sandwiches. well the recipe for

gatorade will soon be changing. they will remove the controversial ingredient vegetable oil that is used to distribute coloring evenly in the drink and used as a flame retardant. it caused problem in mice. 200,000 people signed an online petition to get that substance removed. the newest pro baseball team is looking for teams. they are hosting an open tryout today. the 2012 north american leaguechampions are looking to fill roster spots at all position. the trials start at 8:00 at laurel creek park in fairfield. major league scouts will also be there. the golden state warriors are in milwaukee today looking to bounce back after a loss to the chicago bulls. all-star david lee lead the warriors with 23 points and 6 rebounds, but it wasn't enough. the warriors trailed by as many as 26 at one point and they were never able to trim that deficit into single digits.

a 19-year-old passenger is dead and several others injured after the police chase lead to a crash. >> reporter: police are still trying to track down the driver of this stolen suv that crashed early this morning as you can see it here, now police, oakland police, they are still out here investigating this scene this morning. the driver of the suv, they ran off after the accident. one of his passengers, the 19- year-old man, he was killed when this suv, they lost control here on this curb and slammed into the tree. chp officers, they were pursuing the suv at the time. and there were a total of eight people inside of it. the sergeant tells me at this point it is unclear how many of those people were wearing seat belts. the accident happened at 3:30 this morning on the drive in the sequoia neighborhood. one young man later died. police say that the other

passengers, they have non-life threatening injuries. the pursuit began when they tried to stop the suvs that came back as stolen. one neighbor told me she heard sirens and screeching tires as this pursuit came to an end. >> and we heard all the cars turning the corner because everybody, they spun out. they woke up my 18-month old and my husband and me as we looked out the window, hearing a huge crash and i think that every cop car i could imagine was here. they sounded like that could happen. >> they ran off after the crash. officers were able to catch one of them right away, but the second man, the man believed to be the driver of the suv, they got away and they are still on the loose this morning. i'm told by the sergeant here on scene that once he is arrested that the driver, he will be facing felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges. and coming up for you, later on in this hour, we will tell you

why investigators are confident that they will be able to find the driver of this suv that was involved in this deadly pursuit this morning. live this morning in oakland, alex savage, ktvu 2 news. the fire broke out just before 7:00 p.m. at the comedy variety theater on texas street in downtown fairfield. smoke and flames were seen climbing o feet up into the air taking crews more than three hours to bring the fire under control. now while everyone inside the building escaped injury, firefighters say that the business is a total loss. >> and just amazing that theflames are coming out of the top as it was real bright. it is really sad. i hope they rebuild it as they have great shows. it is hard to see good comedy. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still under investigation. they've been a staple here for a century. they were scheduled to perform in the next few months, including tommy davidson, jimmy walker and dustin diamond who played screech on the tv show saved by the bell.

oakland police chief committed more than ever to curve violence in the city after a second police officer was shot this week. the camaro crashed into the fruitville district. shortly after officers arrived on the scene, the driver of the camaro fled. they heard a couple gunshots nearby. when they went to investigate, the suspect shot at them, wounding a 13-year veteran officer. the injured officer was still able to help chase down that gunman a block and a half away. >> and this really highlights the level of violence we're dealing with in this city and the fact that someone will take the opportunity to harm one of our officers in full uniform. >> the officer suffered a non- life threatening wound to his leg. on monday an undercover officer was hit during the leg from a confrontation. happening now a march in washington, d.c. to support the president's plan on gun control. thousands of people are there

this morning. marchers have come from san francisco, seattle, newtown, connecticut. speakers are expected to attend including actress kathleen turner and a survivor of the virginia tech massacre. right now they're gathering at the reflecting pool and they will walk to the washington monument for a rally next hour. and next week the california lawmakers will told a special meeting in sacramento and to look at the state's firearm policies and history of gun violence. it comes as the president, pushing for the federal restrictions on certain types of weapons. many lawmakers say that california has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and many of the weapons that the president is considering restrictions for are already illegal in the state. they hope that people will give up their guns at the buyback event today, which is from 10:00 until 2:00 in the afternoon at the san mateo county event center. anyone could surrender weapons, no questions asked and to get up to $100 for a handgun, shotgun or rifle and up to $200 is being offered for the

assault weapon. the congresswoman's office says they are providing the funding. thousands are expected to rally today in san francisco to mark the 40th anniversary of this supreme court decision, legalizing abortion. organizers say that the event will begin with a mass at st. mary's cathedral. followed by a rally. and protesters are going to walk down market street to justin herman plaza starting at 1:00 p.m. the protest is expected to be the largest pro-life event on the west coast. more than two dozen women rights groups are planning a counterprotest to that pro-life rally. several san francisco supervisors and birth control advocate sandra fluke plan to attend that pro choice rally. she made headlines last year after testifying before congress about the need for access to birth control. the rally is going to include a flash mob pro warned by members of dance without borders. san francisco 49er wide receiver michael crabtree can turn all his attention back to the super bowl now that it

appears assault charges will not be filed against him. they claimed that he sexually assaulted a woman at the san francisco hotel following the playoff win against the green bay packers. but after an investigation by the police department special victims unit, they have announced they won't press any charges right now. 49er's general manager issued this response saying that the team is pleased with the decision and "michael and the team can now put this behind us and move forward." well the san francisco 49ers head to new orleans tomorrow. one week before they face the baltimore ravens in super bowl 47. now that team is expected to leave when san jose airports just after 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. cheering them on next sunday, it will be these lucky fans, season ticketholders who won a lottery. they started claiming them y. the face value range from $850

to $1,250. >> we didn't know we were getting the tickets until we got that phone call. so that's very nice. this is our second time we have been picked. >> and they are lucky. the super dome in new orleans will hold about 70,000 people for the games. they each received fewer than 13,000 tickets. super bowl tickets are averaging $3,000 a piece online. they have plans for the super bowl in the past two years. renovating the super dome and the convention center as well as the airport. they will host the super bowl during the next two weeks. for the city, security is a

priority. they are adding about 300 officers from outside the law enforcement agencies to help with patrols. we have a team of anchors heading to new orleans as they will have a live report leading up to the super bowl sunday game. the only place to watch it live is right here on ktvu channel 2. it's a foggy start to your saturday morning giving you a live look here at the blue sky up above low clouds around the bay. dense fog reported for some of the inland areas. a driving hazard if you do have some place to be this morning and that they could be aware of it for some arriving flights. and a 30 -- a 30-minute delay there. we are dry at the morning, but picking up the dense fog for the inland areas, in and around

the big lows here. i'm seeing fog around the bay area, generally between 5 to 7 miles. we're going to find the pockets here where they drop to a quarter mile, making the driving conditions very dangerous. and driving through livermore to expect that there, so driving along i-80, in and around vallejo into fairfield you're going to find that there. so that's what we are dealing with this morning. the temperatures are not too bad out there. 50 degrees san francisco. slightly cooler than yesterday morning in some cases, but the bigger draw that will come later today and into tomorrow morning. you'll notice the cooler weather definitely moving on in. pacific satellite view, we've got a couple systems we're watching. this is the system that

low clouds, fog this morning. more scrimmages are breaking out this morning after the controversial ruling about the soccer riot there last year. sentencing 21 people to death as they tried to break them out. 27 people have died so far including two policemen and the soccer players, all coming after last web's riot. 7 had -- 74 people were killed then. the worse in 15 years. this morning violence came just hours after clashing outside. they set police and the military personnel responding

by firing tear gas right into the crowd. the state department has requested $32 million from congress to train african troops. the request comes after attempting to retake them. they said that they are concerned they could become a base for terrorists. there are no plans to send ground troops there. an oakland teenager admitting of his -- killing his parents will be pleading guilty. the killings took place a year ago when the boy was 15, telling police that he was suspended at school for smoking marijuana and did not want to deal with his parents being upset with him. police found the grog operation across the state from the elementary school.

they found more than 400 marijuana plants after raiding the home yesterday. they had a street value of $600,000. they're surprised that such a large growing operation could be up and running in that residential neighborhood, but there are signs that they could look out for. >> we're finding that most of these houses are rental properties because they are causing thousands of dollars of damages. other crews, they may exist. a house where you would never see the tenants. signs of added ventilation and the sounds of fans. increasing patrols after the suspicious man tried to talk a 10-year-old boy into getting into his car. it happened on thursday afternoon at the elementary school where the boy was walking on through the parking lot to meet his grandfather when a man in the 1970s light blue car tried to lure him into his vehicle. officers will now patrol the area of when children are

getting out of school every day. two cases of staph infection have been confirmed. school officials sent a letter home yesterday asking students to take precautions to stop that spread of the infection. they closed down gyms and locker rooms. they require hospitalization. >> i thought that it was not too big of a deal, but i'm glad they are dealing with it a great way. >> they recommend keeping all cuts clean. never share personal items like towels and soap and to always shower immediately. california joined the list of 26 other states reporting a growing number of flu cases. they are all starting to see

the decrease there where they have died because of the flu. the nurses association is concerned because a part of the hospital will be without heat. a couple of the buildings will lose service. the hospital has taken precautionary steps, such as ordering extra supplies. there are no c section deliveries scheduled and all newborn baths are being postponed. drop offs could be made at the center here. the event is only open to people that live in solano county. all to protect the environment. a ruling has yet to be made over the future of the oyster

farm. they stood outside hoping that the federal judge would allow them to continue operating. the judge did not issue a ruling, but expected to in the coming weeks to give the company a march 15 deadline to move out. they said that the operations are harming the environment. charging visitors a chance to be denied as they would like to install 15 fees for parking. undergoing special training to help life's best friend.

a police chase through the east bay ends in a deadly crash now with the search off for the man who was believed to be drinking. welcome back, i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong.

some five and a half hours after that crash that stolen vehicle remains at the scene. now this all began with the pursuit early this morning. but as the driver of that stolen suv headed on towards oakland, they asked the chp officers for help. the suspect's vehicle eventually went off and up an embankment. two people took off from that vehicle. officers were able to track one of those suspects down, but the other did escape. six passengers were hurt, one of them a 19-year-old who has died. >> we heard the sirens looking out the window. we heard the long screech and we looked and saw the truck go up into the rock, like the rock over there and then the tree and turned sideways. i thought it was going to flip over, but it didn't. >> investigators say they are following good leads if and when the driver is caught he'll face charges including felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter. alex savage was the for us this morning with another live look coming up at 9:00.

police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian. police say the person was crossing the road between walnut drive and brett heart street at 8:00 last night when they were hit by a pickup truck. there's no crosswalk in that area. the driver did stop and is cooperating with police. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead. the cause of that crash still under investigation. a football coach has been fired and five students expelled in the wake of the hazing scandal at a catholic high school in vallejo. officials say that the head coach was fired after five of his players exposed themselves to six younger players in the locker room. they say the incident was part of a pattern of behavior that continued through last season. >> they were expelled because the school has a very strict policy about hazing and about indecent behavior and they violated this. that's one advantage of being a private school. it's cut and dry and they violated the rules so they're out. >> we were not able to reach the coach for comment last night.

officials say he was not involved with the hazing, but bares responsibility because he was in charge when those incident took place. a teenage girl who was attacked by a fellow student on the east bay campus is showing signs of improvement. the attack happened at the freedom high school. the principal said the two got into the fight at the school's cafeteria. the injured girl, a senior was air lifted to the hospital with neck and head injuries said to be coherent and is communicating. police arrested the other girl on felony battery charges. the san francisco giant's fan severely beaten outside dodger's stadium has suffered a setback in his recovery. family members say brian stow has been hospitalized after finding a large blood clot running from his thigh to his pelvis that could have been fatal. a filter has been set.

alameda county sheriff deputies want criminal charges filed against a man who they say threatened a deputy with a 12-inch knife. authorities say that the dublin incident started with a man suffering from bizarre behavior. deputies were forced to shoot the suspect after the man came at them with the knife. >> within two minutes the suspect was already out of the house, he charged at them with the rambo-style knife. about 12 inches long. deputies want him charged with assault with a deadly weapon as he does have a history of mental illness. a 64-year-old woman hit by a truck while walking in san jose has died. officials say the truck driver hit urma on thursday afternoon near the intersection of blossom hill road and meridian avenue. she was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive. authorities have not said whether the driver could face charges. plus say a student who reported seeing a man with a

gun at cupertino middle school made the story up. that incident caused three schools to go into lock down and s.w.a.t. teams showed up too. it also alerted parents about the search for the gunman. >> we emptied back the city and called other officers to fill in. we canceled a fire training day. >> police have not said why the student lied, but they are saying they are recommending criminal charges to be filed for making a false report. san rafael police are looking for another person connected in the 7th bank robbery. it's the 7th in over a month. they west into the west america bank. police describe the robber as a white man in his late 20s, early 30s. police say that the man was dressed similarly to another robber who hit another bank earlier this month. the city of piedmont may

install surveillance cameras. piedmont police responded to two home invasions in the past two weeks and a total of four since september. that has the city planning to install more than two dozen cameras along the oakland border. >> that's a good investigative tool. and if we can get it to be able to have that would make a big difference in order to solve crimes f f -- in order to solve crimes. >> some homeowners are willing to help pay for that added security. repair crews are makingprogress on the section of the bay damaged by the oil tanker. workers have removed some wood, steel, and plastic from the damaged fender system. the demolition is estimated to last another week and then they will take another four months to make the repairs. the city of oakland and alameda counties are stepping up to their efforts to keep the raiders from leaving. they will spend up to a million

dollars to turn the area around the coliseum into a coliseum city that would stretch 1,000 acres including a new football stadium, housing, and retail shops. the project would cost $1 billion, but most of that money coming from private sources. all right, this morning the bay area artist will be back at work in san francisco's mission district putting finishing touches on the mural in honor of the niners. these are pictures of the mural that now graces the lodge of the 2600 block of mission street. the art list tim hong painted it using only climbing ropes and ladders. this is the second niners mural to go up in that area. the first was painted last year during the playoffs. 49er fans are being warned about fake football gear. vendors took off when we approached them. the nfl says it is simple to spot a fake. signs include labels split in two, poor quality graphics, and

unbelievably cheap prices. 49ers are warning fans about phony merchandise being sold out there on the streets. >> i always try to get the official license product. this is my personal preference. i don't like to buy knockoffs. >> officially licensed products have an nfl hologram or sticker of the players sticker logo. they are targeting people selling unlicensed gear. several vendors have already been cited. we have a team of bankers heading to new orleans. they will be giving us live reports and every newscast leading up to super bowl sunday. immediately following the super bowl, the only place to watch a live local post-game show is right here on ktvu channel 2. a reminder for drivers in san francisco. you are going to have to actually start feeding those parking meters tomorrow if you want to avoid a ticket. the city expanded their parking meter enforcements on sundays

leading the -- the bureau. the debate over the president's power to make recess appointments will likely end up at the supreme court. the three judge panel ruled that the president exceeded his constitutional authority last year when he appointed three people to the national labors relations board while the senate was on holiday break. the panel ruled that the senate was technically still in session. the ruling casted down on hundreds of decisions that the labor board made in the past year. keith is stepping down from the number two position at the square, an online payment plan. being blackmailed by a former boyfriend and adds that it was a mistake to continue that relationship after recommending him for the job. he insists that the affair was

consensual. he is not going to renew his contract, asking for a leave of absence. it comes after employees filed three lawsuits against henry alvarez accusing him of discrimination and retaliation. alvarez has requested the leave of absence because his father has been sick. his contract expires this summer. ed lee said he did not ask alvarez to rine. he isly tiring at the end of march where he served as a patrol officer. member of the s.w.a.t. team and detective before being promoted to chief in 2007. the city says that sweeny has been a valuable part of their force, planning to spend time in livermore with his wife and three children. the san francisco attorney says that more than 50 restaurants are creating fraud by not using money from the health care surcharge to provide coverage to their employees. san francisco restaurants collected $15 million from the

healthy surcharge in 2011, but only $10 million was spent providing coverage to employees. so herrera is offering a 90-day amnesty period to repay the funds that were misspent. >> this program seeks to remedy consumer fraud by a relative handful of restaurants and other businesses. >> the golden gate restaurant association says that poor accounting may be responsible for the discrepancies. the largest discrepancy was michael mina. they collected more than $300,000 in surcharges that did not get spent on health care. the restaurant disputes that saying the funds that are not accounted for were held in a separate account. the chicago pizza agreed to pay $205,000 to current and former employees who did not receive health care increasing

i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. it's foggy, temperatures are cooling. rosemary is watching it all for us. how are things looking? >> outside our door right now, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy for most, but many of us also dealing with the foggy conditions, patchy dense fog. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s right now, so not too bad. by afternoon, we do have a cooling trend that will begin to filter into the bay area. we also are unsettled, which means a weak chance at maybe a sprinkle or two. i'll break this down for you and show you those temperatures, coming up. we are following developing news out of oakland this morning, where a high speed chase overnight turned deadly. ktvu reporter alex savage is live where it all happened and has more on what makes this crash so unusual and the search that is under way right now. alex? >> reporter: well, the sergeant i talked to this morning with the oakland police department tells me that at this point police are still trying to track down the driver of that stolen suv. chp officers were pursuing the suv when it crashed early this morning. you can see the results of that accident there.

the car slammed into that tree. now, the driver who police are looking for, facing very serious charges at this point, because one of his passengers, a 19-year-old man, was killed in this accident. that suv was packed with eight people inside. the sergeant tells me it's unclear how many of them were actually wearing seat belts. the accident happened just about 3:30 this morning on legion fields drive in the sequoia heights neighborhood of oakland. paramedics came in and transported six passengers with various injuries. again, one young man later died from his injuries. police say the other passengers have nonlife threatening injuries. the pursuit all started in eler el serito tried to stop the vehicle, which was stolen. one neighbor witnessed the crash, one run off, others on the ground, clearly hurt. >> you knew something was serious, hard to see in the dark.

the officer was, hey, we got an ambulance coming. i think they realized she was hurt and they were trying to keep her calm. >> reporter: investigators say two men in the suv ran off after the accident. officers caught one of them immediately, but the second man, the driver, got away. a sergeant told me this morning investigators do have a good idea, though, who the driver is and they have very solid leads that should help officers track him down today. once arrested, he's facing felony hit and run charges and vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with this accident. now, coming up later on in this hour, you'll hear from one neighbor who tells me she witnessed this crash, but find out why she was afraid to go near this scene. live this morning in oakland, alex savage, ktvu channel 2news. the owner of a popular fairfield comedy club is picking up the pieces this morning after it was destroyed by fire. that fire broke out just before 7:00 last night at the original pepper bellies comedy and variety theater on texas street in downtown fairfield. smoke and flames shot about 50 feet into the air and it took

crews more than three hours to get the fire under control, while everyone inside the building escaped without any injury. firefighters say the business is a total loss. >> just amazing, the flames coming out of the top. it was really bright. it's really sad actually. i hope they rebuild it because they had great shows. it's hard to see good comedy in this area. >> the club has been a staple in fairfield for quarter century. comedians scheduled to perform in the next few months included dustin diamond. the fire is still under investigation. well, new this morning, people from san francisco are taking part in a march in washington, dc to support the president's plan on gun control. this is a live look from the nation's capitol this morning. the march will include thousands of people from across the country, including some in newtown, connecticut. speakers are included to attend, including actress kathleen turner and a survivor of the virginia tech masacre.

they are gathered at the capitol reflecting pool this morning and they plan on walking to the washington monument and you can see a rally now getting under way at this hour. well, next week, california lawmakers will hold a special meeting in sacramento to look at the state's firearm policies and the history of gun violence. it it comes as the president is pushing for federal restrictions on certain types of weapons. many lawmakers say california has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and many of the weapons the president is considering restrictions for are already illegal in this state. now, in about an hour from now, people in san mateo county will trade in their old guns for some cash. now, that buyback is from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 at this san mateo events center. anyone can surrender their weapons, no questions asked. president you can get up to $200 for an assault weapon and $100 for handguns. an oakland police officer is recovering this morning from a gunshot wound to the leg.

the incident began yesterday evening when a burgandy camaro crashed into a sedan at east 12th street and 48th avenue in the fruitvale district. shortly after, officers arrived on scene, the driver of the camaro ran away. police then heard a couple of gunshots nearby and when they went to investigate, the suspects shot at them, wounding an officer. the 13-year veteran was still able to chase the gunman for a block and a half before the suspect surrendered. >> this really highlights the level of violence we're dealing with in the city and the fact that someone will take the opportunity to harm one of our officers in full uniform. >> the officer suffered a nonlife threatening wound to the leg. on monday, an undercover officer was hit in the arm during a confrontation. thousands are expected to rally today in san francisco to mark the 40th anniversary of the supreme court decision legalizing abortion. organizers say the pro life event will begin with a mass at st. mary's cathedral to be

volumed by a rally at civic center plaza. protesters will walk down market street to justin herman plaza, starting at 1:30 p.m. the protest is expected to be the largest pro life event on the west coast. more than two dozen women's rights groups are planning a counter protest to that pro life rally. several san francisco supervisors and birth control advocate sandra fluke plan to attend a pro choice rally today at justin herman plaza. fluke made headlines last year when rush limbaugh called her a prostitute after she testified before congress about the need for access to birth control. the rally will include a flash mob performed by members of dance without borders. san francisco 49er wide receiver michael crabtree can turn all his attention back to the super bowl now that it appears assault charges will not be filed against him. a woman had claimed that crabtree sexually assaulted her at a san francisco hotel following the team's playoff win against the green bay packers. but after an investigation by the police department special victims unit, the district attorney's office has announced

it will not press any charges right now. 49er general manager trent balky issued a response, saying the team is pleased with the decision and, quote, michael and the team can now put this behind us and move forward. well, some very fortunate 49er fans have already struck gold. season ticket holders were entered into a lottery for super bowl tickets and the crowd you're looking at, those are the winners. they lined up at candlestick park to pick up their tickets which ranged from $850 to $1250 a pop. >> we didn't know we were getting the tickets till we got the phone call. it's very nice. this is our second time we've been picked. >> the superdome in new orleans holds about 70,000 people for the game. the 49ers and baltimore ravens each received fewer than 13,000 tickets. super bowl tickets are averaging $3000 apiece online. and many people here in the bay area are showing their

san francisco looking good. 51 degrees outside your door. we have new video this morning of a wild police chase in oklahoma. it happened during rush hour traffic near oklahoma city. at one point, one of those inside the vehicle reached out of the window, there you see it, unhooked the trailer and it went flying into traffic, almost hitting another driver. the chase hit speeds of 110 miles an hour before suspects tried to make a run for it and were eventually arrested. police say those suspects were wanted for burglary and were seen dumping drugs from their suv. well, there are more protests in egypt right now after a controversial ruling about last year's soccer riot. >> protesters demonstrated against the judge's decision to sentence 21 people to death for their role in a soccer riot. relatives of the prisoners then tried to break them out. 200 people have been hurt and 27 have died so far, including two policemen and two soccer players. you're taking a look now at

video from last february's riot when it started. it broke out in the stands during a game between two rival soccer teams. that was the worst soccer violence in 15 years. well, the state department has requested $32 million from congress to train african groups in mali, as an international operation led by france attempts to retake the northern part of that country from militants affiliated with al-qaeda. u.s. officials say they are concerned mali could become a base for terrorists, although president obama says there are no plans for the u.s. to send ground troops there. president obama vowing to hold wall street accountable for any wrongdoing. >> but we also know the free market works best for everybody when we have smart, common sense rules in place to prevent irresponsible behavior. >> in this morning's weekly address, the president highlighted his nominations of mary jo white to the securities and exchange commission and richard cordray to continue leading the consumer financial protection bureau. they are both former

prosecutors and their new jobs will focus on reforming wall street and protecting consumers from predator lending and credit card fees. the president's power to marez appointments will likely end up at the supreme court. a panel ruled the president exceeded his constitutional authority last year when he appointed three people to the national labor relations board while the senate was on a holiday break. the panel ruled that the senate was technically still in session. the ruling cast doubt on hundreds of decisions the labor board made in the past year. the pentagon has started laying off thousands of contract and temporary workers. a spokesman says the agency is letting 46,000 people go. it's an effort to reduce spending ahead of a possible mandatory budget cut in march. if congress fails to reach a deal on deficit reduction, the military will be forced to reduce its budget by billions of dollars. state lawmakers are getting ready to tackle the issue of

healthcare expansion. on monday, lawmakers will introduce a series of proposals to help president obama's affordable healthcare act. one of the most significant proposals will be to streamline the medical enrollment process to help sign up hundreds of thousands of californians currently eligible, but not enrolled. lawmakers will also consider new rules for a new state-run insurance company this fall that would make them cover patients with preexisting disorders. two cases of staph infection have been confirmed at a high school in lafayette. school officials sent a letter home to parents yesterday, asking students to take precautions to stop the spread of the infection. gym and locker rooms were also closed so they could be professionally cleaned. staph infections can have serious complications and require hospitalization. >> i thought that it's not too big of a deal, but i'm glad they are dealing with it in a good way. >> to prevent a staph infection, cdc recommends keeping all cuts clean and covered with bandages. students are being reminded never to share personal items like towels and soap, and to

always shower immediately after games and practices. a ruling has yet to be made over the future of the drakes bay oyster farm. a crowd of supporters stood outside the courthouse in oakland yesterday, hoping that a federal judge would allow the company to continue operating while the eviction is being challenged. now, the judge did not issue a ruling, but is expected to in the coming weeks. the government has given the company a march 15th deadline to move out. drake's bay lost its federal lease in november because the interior secretary said the operation is harming the environment. the california state parks department is not happy about its plan to charge parking for visitors along the coast being denied. the department wants to install 15 self-pay machines at beaches and charge visitors a new $8 fee for parking. the state says those fees are necessary to maintain beaches and open others that were closed to budget cuts. the sonoma county board of zoning, however, denied that request.

. after days of bitter cold, many new yorkers are waking to snow. an arctic blast left fire hydrants frozen, causing pipes to burst. it has also brought further misery to homeowners who haven't had heat since october when superstorm sandy struck. that city set up tents in staten island for homeowners still without heat. a father in new york is in big trouble after police say he left his 1-year-old son in his car for eight hours in freezing temperatures. police say the man forgot to

. the search is on. the unusual outcome of a fatal high speed chase in oakland overnight and why police still have a lot of work to do in the case. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2, saturday, january 26th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. throughout the morning, we have been following adeveloping story in oakland. a stolen suv crashed while eluding police. alex savage was the first reporter on scene in oakland, where he has been talking to investigators and witnesses throughout the morning.

alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. oakland police right now still trying to track down the driver of that stolen suv who triggered a deadly crash this morning. chp officers were pursuing the suv with eight people inside, coming down this steep hill here. that's when the driver lost control and slammed into that tree over there, breaking off that large branch. one of the passengers inside, a 19-year-old man, was killed in the accident. it happened about 3:30 this morning here on legion fields drive in the sequoia heights neighborhood of oakland. paramedics moved in, transporting six passengers with various injuries, and one young man died from his injuries in the end. everyone else is expected to survive. this pursuit actually began all the way over in el cerito when police tried to stop the suv which was stolen. one neighbor we talked to in the area told me she heard a loud crash, but saw officers moving in and then thought twice about getting involved.

>> i'm an rn and i came running because i heard the crash and that's what i'm wired to do. but i was afraid to go and see if somebody was hurt. because i was afraid they would think i was the bad guy. >> reporter: investigators say two men actually ran off right after the accident. officers were able to catch one of them immediately and take him into custody, but the second man who officers say was the driver of the suv, did get away. police are still trying to track him down this morning. investigators do have a good idea who the man is and should be able to track him down at some point later on today. once he is taken into custody, i'm told by police he will be facing a number of serious charges, including vehicular manslaughter charges. live this morning in oakland, alex savage, ktvu channel 2news. palo alto police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian. police say the person was crossing embarcadero between walnut and brett heart street

around 11:00 last night when they were hit by a pickup truck. there is no crosswalk in the area. the driver stopped and is cooperating with police. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. the san francisco giants fan who was severely beaten at dodgers stadium has suffered a setback in his recovery. family members say bryan stow has been hospitalized after doctors found a large clot running from his thigh to his pelvis that could have been fatal. stow received injections to help dissolve that clot and a filter has been inserted into his abdomen to catch any new clots before they reach his lungs. stow suffered brain damage after being beaten after a game outside of dodgers stadium in 2011 and he is permanently disabled. he is expected to be in the hospital at least through the weekend. ♪ a series of benefit concerts are being held this weekend to help raise money for

bryan stow's medical care. tim flannery, the giants third base coach, organized and performed at last night's fund- raiser in mill valley. similar events will be held tonight in napa and tomorrow in santa cruz, which is stow's hometown. >> the day it happened it, didn't just affect bryan stow. everybody became full-time caregivers. >> flannery has already raise the $70,000 for the stow family through performances and dvd sales. now, at ktvu.com, we have posted a link where you can find tim flannery's dvd to benefit bryan stow. look for the web link section under hot topics, which is on our front page. a football coach has been fired and five students expelled in the wake of a hazing scandal at a catholic high school in vallejo. officials at st. patricks st. vincent high school say the head coach was fired after five players exposed themselves to six younger players in the locker room. they say the incident was part of a pattern of behavior that continued through last season.

>> they were expelled because the school has very strict policies about hazing and about abusive behavior and they violated those. that's one advantage of being a private school. it's cut and dried and they violated the rules and they are out. >> we were not able to reach the coach for comment last night. officials say he was not involved with the hazing, but bears responsibility because he was in charge when those incidents took place. now this morning, antioch police are increasing patrols around schools after a suspicious man tried to talk a 10-year-old boy into getting into his car. it happened thursday afternoon near sutter elementary school. police say the boy was walking through a parking lot to meet his grandfather when a man in a 1970s light blue car tried to lure him into his vehicle. officers say they will now patrol the area when children get out of school every day. police in sunnyvale say a student who reported seeing a man with a gun at cupertino middle school made the story up. the incident caused three schools to go under lockdown and s.w.a.t. teams to respond. it also alarmed parents who

were notified by phone and e- mail about the search for a gunman. >> we emptied the city for this and then called back other people, other officers to fill in. we canceled a fire training day. >> police have not said why the student lied, but say they will recommend criminal charges be filed for making a false report. alameda county sheriff deputies want criminal charges filed against a man who they say threatened a deputy with a 12-inch knife. authorities say the dublin incident started with a call about a man exhibiting some bizarre behavior. when they arrived at the home on frederickson lane, deputies say they were forced to shoot him after the man came after them with the knife. >> within two minutes, the suspect was already out of the house. he charged at them with a rambo- style knife, about 12 inches long. >> that man is expected to survive. deputies say they want him charged with assault with a deadly weapon. neighbors say he has a history of mental illness. well, the countdown is on to the super bowl and this

morning, a bay area artist in the city's mission district is putting the finishing touches on a mural in honor of the san francisco 49ers. want to show you pictures of the mural, which is now along the masonic lodge on the 2600 block of mission street. there is the artist there, tim hahn, who painted it using only climbing ropes and ladders. this is the second niners mural to go up in that area. the first was painted last year during the playoffs. 49ers fans are being warned about phony merchandise sold on the street. vendors selling knock-off gear on market street took off when we tried to approach them. the nfl says it is pretty simple to spot a fake. tell-tale signs include labels split in two, poor quality graphics and unbelievably cheap prices. >> i always try and get the official licensed product. this is my personal preference. i don't like to buy knock-offs. >> officially licensed products do have an nfl hologram or a sticker of the players association logo. the nfl has sent inspectors to

san francisco, baltimore, and new orleans to target people selling unlicensed gear and several vendors have already been cited. the city of new orleans says it is ready to welcome the 49ers when he team flies there tomorrow night. the city has planned for the super bowl for the past two years. it has spent close to $750 million, renovating the superdome, convention center, as well as the airport. new orleans will host the super bowl and mardi gras during the next two weeks. >> our great city of new orleans is ready for mardi gras and ready for the super bowl xlvii. i guarantee you, nobody has done both of these things at the same time ever! >> with 150,000 people in the city for the super bowl, security is a priority. new orleans is adding 300 officers from outside law enforcement agencies to help with the patrols. and remember to stay right here with ktvu channel 2 for all your super bowl coverage. we will bring you team coverage of the game starting next week,

starting with a fabulous shot there over the bay. some of us dealing with patchy, dense fog. no trouble over the bridge morning, mostly clear sties. the city of piedmont may install security cameras after increase in home invasions. piedmont police have responded to a total of four home invasions since december, leading the city to install more than a dozen cameras along the oakland border. >> this is a good investigative tool. if we can get it, to be able to have that would make a big

difference in being able to solve crimes. >> piedmont police say they are waiting for an estimate on the cost of installing those cameras. some piedmont homeowners say they are willing to help pay for the added security. police in milpitas found a marijuana grow operation across the street from an elementary school, finding more than 400 marijuana plants after raiding the home on dickson road yesterday. the street value was about $600,000. neighbors say they are surprised that such a large growing operation could be up and running in a residential neighborhood, but police say there are signs residents can look out for. >> we're finding most of these grow houses are rental properties because they are causing thousands of dollars of damage. >> police say other clues that a growing operation may exist in a house where you may never see the tenant, increased ventilation and the signs of fans. nurses association is concerned because part of a berkeley hospital will be without heat or hot water

today. alta bay summit medical center alerted staff that a couple of the north buildings are going to lose service as crews repair a leak in the boiler room. the hospital says it has taken some precautionary steps, such as ordering extra supplies to protect patient care. there are no c-section deliveries scheduled and all newborn baths are being postponed. repair crews are making progress on the section of the bay bridge damaged by an oil tanker earlier this month. since the work began on tuesday, workers removed wood, steel and plastic from the damaged offender system. the demolition is estimated to last another week. then it's going to take another four months to make the repairs. the city of oakland and alameda county are stepping up efforts to keep the raiders from leaving. officials have approved spending up to a million dollars to begin a study to turn the area around the coliseum into a coliseum city, including a football stadium, housing and retail shops. the project would cost a billion dollars with most of the money coming from private

sources. san francisco city attorney says more than 50 restaurants are committing fraud because they are not using money from a healthcare surcharge to provide health coverage to their employees. city attorney dennis herrera says san francisco restaurants collected $15 million from the healthy san francisco surcharge in 2011, but only $10 million was spent providing coverage to employees. herrera is offering a 90-day amnesty period for restaurants to repay those funds that were misspent. >> this program seeks to remedy consumer fraud by a relative handful of restaurants and other businesses. >> the golden gate restaurant association says poor accounting may be responsible for the discrepancies. the restaurant with the largest discrepancy was michael mina. the restaurant disputes the claim and says the funds that are not accounted for were being held in a separate account. one san francisco restaurant has already settled

with the city over those healthy san francisco surcharges. pacci's chicago pizza agreed to pay $205,000 to current and former employees who did not get healthcare, and they are going to increase spending on employee healthcare by $100,000. the restaurant charged customers a 4% surcharge. pacci's says the unused funds were being set aside to pay future healthcare claims by employees. well, a reminder for drivers in san francisco. for the first time you will actually have to start feeding parking meters tomorrow. the city expanded its parking meter enforcement to all meters on sundays from noon to 6:00 p.m. for the past three weekends, drivers only got warnings, but that grace period, again, ends tomorrow. that means violators could find themselves with parking tickets starting at $62. changes are coming to the way people live in new york city in the next two years. it's to help accommodate the city's growing population. but as mary snow reports, the changes are coming at a big price. >> reporter: in a city tight on

living space, things are about to get even tighter. >> so this one room is living room, bedroom-- >> dining room. >> everything? >> everything. >> reporter: these full-time living quarters are what's called a micro apartment. squeezed into an area the size of a modest hotel room. >> there's the bed unit. and then if you don't want to look at the television, you have a bar. at the same time, you have a work space, and you have a desk. >> they are traditional ideas that have been updated in a modern, sexy, italian way. >> i can do this, sort of. >> reporter: pay a visit to some new yorkers who already live in tiny spaces. that modern sleekness may be tough to maintain. >> clothes to down. >> reporter: this micro apartment, which is a museum exhibit, is 325 square feet. regulations currently require a minimum of 400 square feet for new units. but the city is going to bend that rule for a pilot project to build 55 micro apartments,

making space for more people, and reserving nearly half just for low and middle income residents. the city of new york museum curator says new york is following the lead of other places, like tokyo and hong kong. >> why the need for these kind of apartments, to live like this? >> because the city's going to have 600,000 more people and a lot of those people are going to be single. and so they want smaller units that they can afford. >> reporter: what may buy a house in other parts of the country won't get you far in new york city. one major realtor in new york says the average price for a studio apartment is roughly $300,000. >> the average price here is $1.4 million. and for that, you're getting just a small apartment. so even though this seems really expensive, for new york, it's a bargain. >> reporter: a bargain for someone who thinks outside the box, but is willing to live in one. >> and that was mary snow reporting. new york city, not the only city experimenting with these tiny dwellings.

original pepper bellies comedy and variety theater on texas street in downtown fairfield. an investigation into the cause is under way. an oakland police officer is recovering this morning from a gunshot wound to the leg. officials say he was shot after a car crashed into another car on 12th street and 48th avenue. one of the drivers ran away. he was arrested. this was the second oakland police officer to get shot this week. the online hacker group anonymous has taken over a government website to avenge the death of an internet activist. >> two weeks ago today, a line was crossed. two weeks ago today-- >> anonymous hijacked the site belonging to the u.s. sentencing commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch. family and friends of aaron swartz say he killed himself after being hounded by federal prosecutors. he helped develop the san francisco-based website reddit.com. anonymous is threatening to

release stolen data taken from government network systems. now, a man from west sacramento has filed a lawsuit against subway, claiming fraud and false advertising and it is the latest in a series of claims against subway following this photo t shows one of the company's foot-long sandwiches is actually just 11 inches long. the chain has apologized. subway says it is redoubling efforts to ensure consistency and the correct length of all its sandwiches. the san jose sharks have back-to-back games this weekend at hp pavillion. today, it's the colorado avalanche in town at the tank. puck drops at 1:00. tomorrow, the sharks will host the vancouver canucks at 5:00. sharks are 3-0, so far in this lockout-shortened season. the defending american league west champions oakland a's are getting an early start to the season, with fan fest tomorrow. unfortunately, if you don't have a ticket, you won't be able to get in. the event is already sold out, although children 6 and under can still get in for free with an adult who has a ticket. there will be free autograph sessions and memorabilia for
